When Sundar Pichai isn’t busy transforming the tech world by running Google and Alphabet, the Indo-American keeps an eye on football and cricket. An avid fan of the little Argentine, Lionel Messi, the CEO of Google had considered a career in sports when he was a young boy growing up in Chennai, as cricket fever raged across the country.
Sundar Pichai, during one of his trips to India, spoke to the students of SRCC in New Delhi in 2015 where he confessed his big dreams of becoming a cricketer, after falling passionately in love with the sport. Like most other Indians, Pichai was also torn between his love for football and cricket and harbored plans to wield the willow tree more seriously, seeing people like Sunil Gavaskar and later Sachin Tendulkar setting off a storm on the pitch. for India.
“I dreamed of being a cricketer like so many Indians,” admitted Pichai. “I was a big fan of (Sunil) Gavaskar when he was playing and later, of Sachin (Tendulkar) when he was playing. I always had a dream,” the 49-year-old said affectionately.
But football also had the heart of Google CEO from a young age and he remembered, “I’m a huge football fan. I remember when I was young I used to drive my mom crazy. After earning his undergraduate degree in Metallurgical Engineering from IIT Kharagpur, Pichai headed to Standford in search of a master’s degree and went on to obtain his MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and the change continent has brought him closer to football, which he still follows religiously and Lionel ‘La Pulga’ Messi is still someone he adores!
