Where is A piece in production and when will it be released on Netflix?
Filming was a long time coming, and if not for the global pandemic, we likely would have seen production begin in the summer of 2020. Since then, we’ve had multiple delays and false start dates for filming.
The majority of filming is taking place at Cape Town Film Studios, which have ample space for the pirate ships and, according to a person familiar with the production, they have three pirate ships made for the show so far.
According to Steven Maeda, they originally planned to start production in 2021.
“We have pretty much all 10 scripts written. We’ll start casting when we get back. I suspect June 1, but we’re going to start casting. We have a lot of names we’re talking about, and we should be in production in September . We worked closely with Sensei Oda. So, let’s start, and this one is really big. I want to say, snowdrops was a big production; it’s even bigger.
However, those plans have apparently been pushed back as we started seeing fans spotting the ongoing production throughout February and into March 2021. You can see some of the behind-the-scenes shots we found online below:
On September 3, 2021, Netflix officially unveiled the storyline for the first episode. It is written by Matt Owens and Steven Maeda and is titled “Romance Dawn”.

In September 2021, reports surfaced of a crew preparing to begin filming.
In early October 2021, Steven Maeda announced that he had landed in Cape Town (where the series was to shoot).
Filming finally began in February 2022, and the show is set to wrap on July 10, 2022 according to multiple production listings.

Within the first month of production, the South African president issued a press release talking about the show saying “One Piece is Netflix’s biggest production project in Africa to date – both in terms of scale and budget, covering South African manpower, infrastructure and suppliers.”
He also added:
“One Piece, set in Cape Town, involves over 50 South African actors; more than 1,000 crew member jobs (composed of 67% previously disadvantaged and 46% young employees), as well as an Academy of Creative Excellence (ACE) mentorship program for more than 30 young creatives and technicians in collaboration with the SA Film Academy during 2022.”
On May 8, 2022, Marc Jobst, who is directing episodes 1 and 2 of the series, announced that those first two episodes had wrapped filming on May 7.
In a follow-up tweet, Jobst said:
“Goodbye South Africa. Land of sunshine, hard work, little creatures that visit every day, and mountains that take my breath away every day. Thank you to the incredibly talented team that helps bring this show to life.
Now let’s move on to the next step… the cut”

How many episodes will there be in One Piece Season 1?
When the show was first announced, ten episodes were confirmed. Madea later confirmed that there were “10 scripts”.
We should probably discuss the rumors surrounding A piece be reduced to eight episodes. A cast sheet reported by Murphy’s Multiverse indicated there would be eight episodes instead of the originally planned ten. We couldn’t get confirmation on this, but we’re still waiting for 10.
Will there be a season 2 of A piece?
As we mentioned above, there is an immense amount of source material that can be covered in a live-action adaptation. In the anime, the episode count currently stands at 995, there’s no way the live-action adaptation will have that episode count. If more seasons are expected in the future, we can expect to see a lot of filler glossed over and story arcs cut out.
Although the idea of cutting out one of the A piece stories can be blasphemous, how on earth can a live-action series cover 95 manga volumes in just a few seasons? Each season can cover the respective “Saga” which has a number of story arcs.
The first season of the live-action adaptation will cover the recruitment of Zoro, Nami, Usopp, and Sanji and will end with Luffy battling Arlong.
Is the original One Piece anime series on Netflix?
Netflix now has 7 seasons of the original anime series in the United States.
Seasons that Netflix US (other regions may vary) air include:
- East Blue (61 episodes)
- Entering the Grand Line (16 episodes)
- Enter Chopper on Winter Island (15 episodes)
