Over-aged Remo Stars goalkeeper expelled from U-20 camp
Remo Stars FC goalkeeper Kayode Bankole was decamped from the U-20 national team yesterday with the Flying Eagles scouting exercise taking place in Abuja due to his age.
The lanky keeper was born in 2002, which automatically excluded him from the tournament.
Confirming this in Abuja, head coach Ladan Bosso said it was unfortunate the goalkeeper was already past the stipulated age as he would have been a quality addition to the squad.
Meanwhile, following critics who hailed the list of 40 players invited to the camp, Bosso invited six more Nigeria Professional League players to the Abuja camp.
Top of the list of newly invited players are three Kwara United players, Shola Raheem, Abdulsalam Abdulsalam, Musa Afeez Aka Olororo.
The others are Hillary Albert of Plateau United, Ayo Adejubu of Shooting Stars and Henry Uzodika of Abia Warriors.
“Unbeknownst to people, we shortlisted 28 players from NPFL clubs, 14 of them failed to pass age checks at TMS level. So, they need to be replaced”.
“We only have 3 weeks to get the team in order and there is no time to waste at all,” he concluded.
The Flying Eagles opened the competition camp in Abuja on Monday and are in Group B with Ghana’s Black Satellites and Burkina Faso’s Young Stallions.
The competition will kick off in Niamey on May 7 with the two finalists qualifying for the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
