Travel back in time with a Toys R ‘Us store flyer from 1996 in Maine
As we get older, it becomes easier to look back to a time when we were kids and think about how much simpler things were “back then.” Our judgment is often cloudy about the quality of things, unless those memories involve the video games that made us all happy. So it’s no surprise that an old flyer from a Toys R’ Us store in Bangor, Maine gone viral when it was shared on Reddit recently by beastheadbutt.
The leaflet is from toys r us location in Bangor from the year 1996. Since toy stores no longer follow the practice, it was quite common to receive a multi-page flyer in the mail or through the newspaper featuring all the hottest toys latest and most fashionable. Speaking of the hottest toys, at the time this flyer was printed the Nintendo 64 was IT and as the flyer proclaims “THE FUTURE IS NOW”.
A page-turner shows that Nintendo wasn’t the only game in town. The original Sony Playstation was still going. Considering that people are desperately looking for Playstation 5 these days, this flyer makes it look like the original Playstation was a lifetime ago. Look at these game prizes.
Page 3 of the flyer may surprise even the most avid gamer. Do you remember the Sega Saturn? If you shake your head no, you wouldn’t be alone. The Sega Saturn was a colossal flop, hence why you could buy the entire console for $99.
Pages 4 and 5 of the flyer are an even deeper throwback for video game fanatics. Some of the “new” games shown are some of the last games created for the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis consoles before they were put to pasture.
